Unit 12 Differences between L1 and L2 learning

Importance in L1

First of all we have to take into account the age, the acquisition of the language here starst when we are babies and continues through our lives, even in school when we develop writings such as academic writings where we start developing some language skills. Also when we are babies we acquire the language at the same time as we learn the cognitive ones; we are motivated to learn the language to communicate as well. We acquire that language by picking it up and we lots of exposure. by reading, listening and interacting with the family or friends, also by perceiving the world around us. 

How to teach

In this case the first job is for parents to expose their children to the language and in the case of academic and other types of writing teachers must introduce examples of those writings and then make students practice.

Importance in L2

It starts in primary school while we are developing other skills and we are kind of motivated to learn that language but in adults it is different since they have more expectations about the language so as mentioned before we need more motivation or reasons in order to learn the language and more exposure since it is harder for them in that phase because they have already developed their cognitive skills. As adults we need to be taught specific vocabulary and grammar, we need to interact with each other, practice a lot, make self-correction, we need encouragement and we need to experiment with the language.

How to teach

In this case teachers will need to bring realia, authentic material and interactive activities for students to first be motivated and give them enough examples and exposure to the language so students will understand and learn the language in many of the cases wihtout awareness. In additioin, in this process students will need a lot of interaction since they are leraning the language in order to communicate.

Unit 11 Role of Error

Importance of the role of error

Making mistakes is always important when learning a language because we correct the errors and improve every time.  Students make mistakes when something is beyond their level but there are also slips that come from lack of concentration because students are not paying attention. For instance: error - she do not like movies; slips - he -- she does not like movies. Student corrected the mistake so it is a slip. Also students tend to overgeneralize rules like in the past, so they have to just study and check the rules and of course practice in order to correct that. There is also fossilisation, this is when students keep their mistakes and do not correct them. As there is a negative side of errors, there is also a positive side: the self-correction which make students better learners and speakers.

How to teach the role of error

I consider this is not to be really taught but we as teachers need to give students lots of activities in which they can receive feedback and also let them correct themselves in an oral presentation. In this way students will analyse their errors and correct them, the teacher can also use rubrics where he/she can write the specific errors in any area so students visualize, analyze and practice in order not to make them again.

Unit 10 - Exposure and focus form

Importance of exposure

Exposure is very important when learning a second language since we as humans learn better if we take part of the action if we involve ourselves as Benjamin Frankiln said: Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn. That quote it is literal because most of the times is super useful when students are exposured to the real world and obviously after having the basic knowledge they will be able to pick up many vocabulary and also practice and really learn the content checked in class. They need to interact not just with the teacher but with each other and with real people, real objects and just to communicate in general to be able to be efficient students. in addition, they need to ckeck interesting topics with variety of activities and also with a higher difficukty level so that obligate them to make a bigger effort when learning.

How to teach exposure

In general students will need to read and listen to information from the real world. For instance: they can listen to stories or songs; or read magazine articles but without any task.

Importance of focus on form and how to teach it

Obviously it is important to focus on form because we can not communicate in any language without knowing the grammar structures or functions of each word and the purpose to communicate, so as teachers we must force students to use the grammar and vocabulary points taught through exercises with pictures such as worksheets in the case of vocabulary and orally in the case of grammar. In conclusion, we may find activities which combine forms and exposure for students to learn successfully.

Unit 9 Motivation

Importance of motivation

Motivation is important because it is the reason why we do something, it is the impulse to achieve our goals in life. In the class is very important since students need a purpose to learn the target language without getting bored of being aware of that. So teachers' main objective must be not just to teach the language but teach it in an interactive way so students enjoy learning. As the writer Iain McInally mentioned in his video "learning Enlgish: motivation" if students detect that the material and information presented do not match with their expectations of the language learning process they inmediately will find it boring and will not be interested on that class.

How to develop motivation in the class
 

The first thing the teacher must do is introduce the target language culture by providing interesting facts and information about its culture. Also teacher must establish a good rapport in the class by valuing every student effort and in this way give students confidence and making them develop their autonomy with interactive tasks in which they can be unique. In addition, teachers must provide authentic materials and not just follow the book, but instead give students realia and exposure to the real world. In this way students will feel comfortable and motivated to learn the target language.Moreover, as the creator of the video "Students engagement and motivation strategies and tips" mentioned and who has been inspired on Michael Grinder, Harry Wong. Ruby Payne and Robert Marzano. some of the most important things for motivating students from the very beginning is: getting to know their interests, challenges and family; a little bit about them. This will increase students confidence in the teacher and motivation to attend to class. There are more tips we have in that video that can be useful for us when teaching.
